Each of our rugs is lovingly hand-made to order by our craftsmen. We create in small batches to keep the quality high and the details beautiful and true to Joel's vision of the artwork, while also avoiding mass production and waste. Pre-orders are open from 1 October and close on 15 October. From that date, your piece will take around 6–8 weeks to be carefully crafted and shipped out to you. By placing your order, you’re embracing this thoughtful process and the time it takes to create something truly special.
The CARP-et! is a one-of-a-kind, custom shaped rug designed after the carp, or koi, as the fish is known in Japanese. The composition is that of the irezumi style, very much how koi are represented in Japanese tattoo art. This is a stand-out piece that will feature in any room, whether as a floor rug or as a display wall hanging.
The rug is hand-tufted from 100% New Zealand wool. A cut pile presents the koi in shades of grey, and a loop pile highlights the orange for texture, with a level pile height throughout the rug.
Artist's note
This piece is one that I am immensely proud to bring to life. I first had the idea to design rugs some years ago, when I was furnishing my working studio space. The reverberations I got from my speakers against the bare floor in the room set me looking for a rug to improve my daily sound quality, and that's when I decided to design one! What started as a search for a functional piece of furnishing soon led to being captivated by the possibilities of large, irregularly-shaped rugs in the style of art I love best.
Art is, by some definition, impractical. The tattoos I make have no functional purpose, but hold value in being a created work that is aesthetically appealing to both artist and wearer. Tattoos tend to be a more private and personal form of art; I am hoping that a large, beautiful irezumi-style rug will be a more open way of sharing an appreciation of the art form.

Taxes
If you live within Australia, you will not be taxed on your order, as we ship orders from Melbourne.
The US has announced tariffs on imports from Australia and trade partners globally. The US has imposed a 10 per cent baseline tariff on most imported goods, effective 9 April 2025. Most goods originating in Australia are subject to this tariff on import into the US, which we have worked into the rate of our shipping costs, which is why you will notice a higher shipping rate than previously.
Every other country's policy on import duties, customs and taxes is different. Please be informed of your country's policies on importing goods from overseas, as usually, orders over a certain threshold will be subject to fees upon delivery. Unfortunately, we have no control over these fees, as this is determined by each country's customs office.
