Description
The mythical giant turtle, known as the minogame (蓑亀) or "straw raincoat-turtle" due to the tail resembling a farmer's straw coat, is regarded as a highly auspicious creature in Japanese folklore. It is believed to live for 10,000 years, representing both longevity and wisdom.
Artist's note
This style of turtle in Japanese art symbolises longevity, with the peculiar-looking hair being representative of a train of algae, which can only be attained for having lived that long!
